Batteries and accumulators contain both valuable resources and harmful substances. Therefore, all consumers are legally obligated to dispose of old batteries and accumulators at approved collection points. This allows them to be recycled in an environmentally friendly and resource-saving manner.
On batteries containing harmful substances you will find the chemical symbols:
Batteries are also marked with a symbol indicating that they must not be disposed of with household waste:
Household batteries and rechargeable batteries can be returned to any OTTO shop. You can also return batteries and rechargeable batteries free of charge to any retail outlet that sells comparable products – regardless of the location of purchase or brand. Please cover the terminals of high-performance batteries (e.g., cell phone and laptop batteries) before returning them to prevent short circuits. Please dispose of defective batteries at your local recycling center's hazardous waste collection point.
Electrical appliances are marked with the following symbol, which means that they must not be disposed of with household waste:
Electrical appliances contain valuable resources and pollutants. Consumers are legally obligated to dispose of old electrical appliances at authorized collection or return points, such as local waste disposal or recycling centers. These accept old appliances free of charge and recycle them in an environmentally friendly and resource-saving manner. You can find authorized collection points near you at www.take-e-back.de . Old electrical appliances with an edge length of up to 25 cm are accepted free of charge, regardless of the number.
For the acceptance of larger devices (> 25 cm) at take-e-back collection points, proof of a new device purchase is required.
When you purchase a new device in categories 1, 2, or 4 (according to the Electrical and Electronic Equipment Act) and have it delivered to a private household, you can have an old device of the same type collected free of charge. This option will be requested during the ordering process.
If this service is not offered, please use the disposal options listed above.
Electrical devices contain valuable resources and pollutants. Certified disposal companies first check whether they can be refurbished and reused. If not, they treat the devices in an environmentally friendly manner, removing pollutants and recycling resources.
According to Directive 2008/98/EC, waste prevention measures take priority over waste management. Extend the lifespan of your electrical appliances by repairing them or reselling them in working order. Further information can be found in the Federal Government's Waste Prevention Program, which is supported by the states.
Before disposing of old electrical appliances, remove old batteries and rechargeable batteries as well as lamps/lighting devices that can be removed without damaging them and dispose of them separately as described above.
Please delete all personal data on electrical or electronic equipment before handing it in for disposal.
Most lamps and light bulbs (e.g., fluorescent lamps, energy-saving lamps, LEDs) contain harmful substances and waste resources and must therefore be disposed of at authorized collection points. Local recycling centers accept them free of charge. You can find collection points near you at www.take-e-back.de .
Compact fluorescent and neon lamps may contain small amounts of mercury. If they break, avoid skin contact, collect the broken pieces with damp paper or cardboard, and pack them airtight for transport. Ventilate the room for about 30 minutes and do not use a vacuum cleaner.
These can be disposed of with household waste. If you are unsure about the lamp type, please dispose of them at a suitable collection point.
